Post Independence Mission in India. Dani AbrahamThe post independence era of missions began in early 1970’s. Until then it had been pushed mainly by the foreign missions. By the end of the century it had evolved into a formidable movement. During its history Christian missions in India has gone through three major phases.
1.Cross-cultural missions The cross-cultural mission movement was present in the decades of the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Cross-cultural missionaries were sent from South to central India, North India and North East India. Many of them struggled to learn languages and adapt to cultural and lifestyle differences of their mission field. However, these missionaries did their work faithfully and planted several churches in different cities of the country.
Reason for this movement.During the 60s God raised several leaders from South India. Most of them formed Christian organizations under their leadership. Almost all organizations sent missionaries to other states to spread Gospel. It led the cross-cultural mission movement.
2.Mono-cultural mission. The early cross-cultural missionaries of each state became leaders in those states after one or two decades. They realized the power of mono-cultural missions and began to concentrate their efforts to train the native people and send them their native places. This strategy was adopted by most of the Christian organizations in the states where they worked and even succeeded where other missionary efforts had failed by allowing new churches to be planted in several new regions.
Reason for this movement.Cross-cultural missionaries faced many problems on their mission field such as the differences in dialects, cultures, life styles and climates. After a long struggle they realized they were not doing as much work done as they felt needed to be done. Many developed training centers in their mission state and trained local missionaries. It led the mono-cultural mission movement in 1990’s.
3.Local church mission In the beginning of the new century some visionary leaders began to concentrate on training and mobilizing their church members to do mission work through non-formal theological education. As they did their churches began to grow and multiply. This has become the present missions movement in India. This plan is based on the “Great Commission” that every one who follows Christ should share the good news and make disciples. God is using this movement at this time in India. He is working through local churches and believers who seek to fulfill the “Great Commission”.
Reason for this movement. Many organizations focused on developing mono-cultural missions by starting their own training institutions. As a result several institutions were established in each state. But at the end of 1990’s and beginning of new century most of those institutions faced the problem of getting faithful and dedicated students. Some organizations closed their training institutions. The local church has now become the training center.
